There are no Police or Police Department in New England, North Dakota. New England is patrolled by Hettinger County Sheriff Officers.
The three Hettinger County Sheriff Officers that actually live in New England, and spend the most amount of time in New England, are Chief Deputy Kyle, Deputy Jed, and K9 Deputies Kennedy and Lyon.
The Hettinger County Sheriff Deputies and the Hettinger County Sheriff Sarah Warner try to be fair, reasonable, and leave residents alone as much as possible.
In my opinion, there are several reasons why the Hettinger County Sheriff and the Sheriff Deputies try to leave residents alone as much as possible:
- To not alienate, anger, and make enemies out of the residents.
- To not get involved in unnecessary traffic stops so that Deputies remain free to respond to actual crimes and emergencies.
- To focus their time, energy, effort, and resources on illegal drug-use and drug-trafficking.
From what I have seen, the primary focus of the Hettinger County Sheriff Department is illegal drug-use and drug-trafficking stemming from the belief that the vast majority of all crime in southwest North Dakota is caused by illegal drugs.
I believe that all of the Sheriff Deputies in Hettinger County spend most of their shifts observing the travel, movement, location, and activities of known and suspected drug-users and drug-traffickers. In doing so, they are able to gain a pretty good idea of who is stealing, who is selling stolen property, who is hiding stolen property, where fugitives are hiding, when, where, and who drugs are being supplied to.
Because Lyon the Hettinger County Sheriff Department K9 drug-dog is housed in the middle of New England, I believe that when Lyon starts barking and acting-up when he is off-duty, I believe it’s because he has caught the scent of illegal drugs within the town.
